The Grand Chancellor's missions
The Grand Chancellor is the representative of the Order of the Legion of Honor, chosen for a six-year term by the President of the French Republic from among the Order's highest dignitaries. He chairs the councils of the national orders and, assisted by a Secretary General, directs the Grand Chancery in all its activities. He is also Chancellor of the National Order of Merit.
Th Grand Chancery
As a State institution, the Grand Chancery of the Legion of Honor fulfills three public service missions:
- administering the national orders, foremost among them the Legion of Honor;
- running two public educational establishments: the Maison d'Education of Legion of Honor of Les Loges and Saint-Denis;
- managing the museum of the Legion of Honor and the Orders of Chivalry.
Patrimoine
The Grand Chancery carries out its missions in historic buildings acquired when it was founded. This architectural heritage is complemented by its museum collections and archives, built up over 220 years of activity. This rich heritage, which must be shared and passed on, requires the institution to maintain it on an ongoing basis, and to call on donors for support.
