Find honorees

The Grand Chancery of the Legion of Honor can help you find information about honorees.

This search only concerns recipients of the French Legion of Honor, National Order of Merit or Military Medal. For other French decorations, please contact the relevant ministries.

Searching for honores

Living honorees’ records are not accessible to others.

For Legion of Honor recipients who died before 1977, you can consult the Léonore database of the Archives Nationales.

Note: As the dates of death of Legion of Honor members have not always been known by the Grand Chancellery at the time of transferring records to the Archives Nationales, the Legion of Honor has retained many records of members who died before 1977, including many World War 1 service members.

For your searches, you can send a request to our services via our contact form. This is the preferred method, but you can also mail a letter to the Grand Chancery, giving the person's first name, surname (prior names if any), date and place of birth and death (if applicable).

The Mémoire de l’honneur project

The Mémoire de l'honneur (Memory of Honor) projet is an initiative of the Grand Chancery aiming to safeguard the institution’s archives and make them entirely accessible to the public.

In addition to digitizing and preserving in a dedicated building documents such as the records of former students of the Maison d'education, this initiative involves drawing up an inventory of all honorees in order to produce a single list.

The initiative aims to compile an exhaustive list of all recipients of the Legion of Honor, the Military Medal and the National Order of Merit, i.e., an estimated two million individuals.

Financed by donations, Mémoire de l'honneur is still seeking funds. You too can help the Grand Chancery preserve the remembrance of honorees by making a donation.
